red river cafe

The other day, Preston and I saw this sign:

So we did.

Well, not really. In all honesty, we’ve passed this cute cafe hundreds of times in the past year. Despite its name, it’s actually not on Red River, but right off it on Medical Arts. It’s located on my way to school, yoga, Whole Foods, the drag, several coffee shops, and downtown, so really there was no reason we should have put off visiting it for so long. Plus, I’ve recently become obsessed with Sunday brunching. (Suggestions for delicious Austin brunch locations are very, very welcome.)

Red River Cafe is adorable, with a giant fried egg on the front of the building and a shaded porch area that would be delightful to sit at had it not been upwards of 200 degrees outside. Unlike Kerbey Lane, this cafe surprisingly didn’t look like it was patronized by current college students; most of the customers were in their mid-40s and, I romantically imagined, former Longhorns. Also, I’ve heard rumors that it’s BYOB.

I spotted the migas immediately on the Saturday/Sunday specials section, and Preston went for the bacon cheeseburger with fries. The migas were perfect–delicious melted cheese on top, full of green peppers and onions, and served with two house-made tortillas and fresh, seasonal fruit (cantaloupe for me). Best of all — only about $6 per plate.

But we both ended up eating more with our eyes than our mouths. The Sunday special was French toast, and everyone around us was served heaping plates of it. If I could go back in time, that’s what I’d get. I wish I could have taken a picture paparazzi-style.

Great food, great prices. You know I’ll be back for breakfast, brunch, and possibly brinner.
